400;\">European Journal of Clinical Microbiology &#038; Infectious Diseases<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirms what health authorities have been warning for months: the incidence of gonorrhea in Catalonia has increased by 236% since 2019 and has already reached 152.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the period 2022-2023. In other words, in just four years the cases have more than tripled.<\/span><\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d448aff e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d448aff\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-525b5f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"525b5f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research, prepared by professionals from the Public Health Agency of Catalonia together with the Vall d&#8217;Hebron University Hospital and the Centre for Epidemiological Studies on STIs and AIDS, analyses more than 23,000 laboratory-confirmed cases during 2022 and 2023. And it not only warns of the increase in infections: it also confirms that the antibiotics that had traditionally been used to treat the disease are working less and less. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c6b385 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c6b385\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>What is gonorrhea and why is it a concern now?  <\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1435e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1435e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium called<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact\u2014vaginal, anal, or oral\u2014and can affect both the genitals and other areas such as the throat or rectum.<\/span> <\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people go through it without clear symptoms, and that&#8217;s part of the problem: if it&#8217;s not treated quickly, it can cause serious complications, especially in women, because it increases the risk of ectopic pregnancy and infertility. In men, it can cause pain when urinating, unusual discharge and, in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advanced cases, affect the urethra, the urinary tract of the penis<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-faac278 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"faac278\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43d3343 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43d3343\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Which antibiotics no longer work well?  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e92466 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8e92466\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where the study focuses. Researchers have found that three of the antibiotics that have historically been used against gonorrhea have very high levels of resistance: <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Ciprofloxacin:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer works in 71% of cases. Seven out of ten patients do not respond to this drug.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tetracycline:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fails in almost half of the cases analyzed (49%).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Azithromycin:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five cases (20%) is resistant to it. This is particularly worrying because it was part of the combination therapy used until recently.<br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The less bad news is that ceftriaxone \u2014the current antibiotic of choice\u2014 continues to be effective in almost 100% of cases. But, as the same study explains, bacteria develop resistance the more they are exposed to drugs: if infections continue to grow, the margin for finding effective treatments is getting shorter. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When we talk about antibiotic resistance, it&#8217;s not an abstract problem. It means that, if we don&#8217;t act, in a few years we could be faced with sexual infections that are common today and that we no longer know how to treat. Infections in people aged 25 and older are more resistant to ciprofloxacin, tetracycline and penicillin. And infections detected outside the genitals\u2014especially in the anal canal\u2014have higher rates of resistance to multiple antibiotics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has a direct implication: if only the genital area is tested, infections in other locations that are equally contagious and potentially more difficult to treat may be overlooked. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What can you do?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention remains the most effective weapon: <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Use a condom<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in all sexual practices (vaginal, anal and oral). It is the most effective measure to prevent infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Get tested regularly<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you have different sexual partners, even if you don&#8217;t have symptoms.
