The Sagrat Cor University Hospital performs a radical prostatectomy with the new Toumai robotic platform
The UROCAT Urology team at the Sagrat Cor University Hospital in Barcelona has successfully performed a robotic radical prostatectomy for the treatment of prostate cancer using the Toumai platform, one of the most recent additions to the field of robotic surgery.
The intervention was led by doctors Salvador Esquena, Antonio Rosales and Christian Isalt. The patient progressed favorably and was discharged from the hospital a few days after the operation.
The system allows the surgeon to operate from a console with high-definition three-dimensional vision and control articulated instruments with great precision.
As with other robotic platforms, this facilitates the performance of complex procedures with much more precise movements than those allowed by conventional surgery.
One of the unique features of Toumai is that it was developed to enable remote surgery. The technology allows a surgeon to operate on a patient hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away via high-speed connections. Although this application is still limited, it shows how far robotic surgery continues to evolve.
The platform also incorporates haptic feedback, a system that allows the surgeon to perceive the force they are applying to the tissues during the intervention. This information provides an additional sense of control, especially useful in delicate procedures.
In Urology, Toumai is indicated for complex interventions such as radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy for the treatment of kidney tumors or various reconstructive surgeries of the urinary tract.
The incorporation of this platform reinforces the commitment of UROCAT and the Sagrat Cor University Hospital to continue incorporating new tools that allow for increasingly precise and less invasive treatments to be offered to patients.
