Penile Prosthesis
A penile prosthesis is an implantable device that allows men with severe erectile dysfunction to regain the ability to achieve and maintain an erection for sexual activity.
This treatment is a definitive and highly effective solution for patients who have not responded to medications, shockwave therapy, or intracavernous injections.
There are two main types of prostheses:
- Inflatable prostheses → Hydraulic devices with a pump that allow natural control of the erection.
- Malleable prostheses → Flexible rods that maintain a constant or adjustable rigidity of the penis.
What is it used for?
Penile prosthesis implantation is indicated for:
- Men with severe erectile dysfunction who do not respond to conventional treatments.
- Patients with post-surgical erectile dysfunction, especially after radical prostatectomy.
- Cases of advanced Peyronie’s disease with severe curvature and inability to achieve penetration.
- Individuals with cavernous fibrosis or severe venous insufficiency where other therapies have failed.
Main benefits
- Definitive solution for erectile dysfunction → Allows maintaining a firm erection safely and controllably.
- High satisfaction rate → Over 90% of patients and their partners report significant improvement in sexual life.
- Natural function in inflatable prostheses → The hydraulic mechanism allows erections and flaccidity similar to the natural ones.
- Discreet maintenance → In the case of inflatable prostheses, the device is completely internal and not visible externally.
- Restoration of confidence and quality of life → Restores sexual and emotional function for patients.
Special considerations
- Irreversible surgery → Once the prosthesis is implanted, natural erectile tissue will no longer regain function.
- Recovery period → Healing time is required before resuming sexual activity (approximately 4–6 weeks).
- Possible long-term revision → Although highly durable, prostheses may require replacement after 10–15 years.
